Committed capital and paid-in capital

Committed and paid-in capital describe different amounts; a performance ratio needs its stated paid-in denominator.

Read the original commitment record

In a fictional simple arrangement, total commitment is 200 and cumulative paid-in is 100. The remaining uncalled amount is 100 only under the case’s assumption that there are no recycling, recallable, fee or other commitment adjustments.

Keep the metric name attached to its base

If distributions plus residual value are 150, dividing by paid-in 100 gives TVPI 1.5. Dividing by commitment 200 gives 0.75, which is another ratio. The headline commitment size does not automatically replace the paid-in base.

Retain the future funding question

A paid-in performance multiple does not tell the investor how much additional capital may be required or when. Record the remaining obligation and applicable terms separately from performance.

Avoid a generic unfunded shortcut

Real arrangements can adjust commitment accounting for particular transactions. This page’s 200−100 arithmetic belongs to its explicitly simple case. Check the actual terms and record before applying the same subtraction elsewhere.
