Eight domains. One exam day. One plan that covers all of it.

The CFP® exam tests every corner of a client’s financial life in a single 170-question day — tax, retirement, estate, insurance, investments, conduct, and the psychology behind the advice. Omni Finance Academy splits the eight CFP Board domains into Foundations and Advanced Planning, so each one is learned before it is combined in a case.

Why candidates take the CFP® now

The financial planning profession is about to hand over almost its entire bench. Roughly 105,900 advisors plan to retire within a decade — a number that sits within a rounding error of the entire CFP® population today — and a quarter of them have no succession plan at all.

Meanwhile the client side keeps growing. That mismatch is why firms have started counting CFP® professionals as a headline measure of capacity, and why the marks now function less as a differentiator than as the entry ticket to leading a client relationship.

What the CFP® marks are

CFP Board administers the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification, the standard credential for comprehensive personal financial planning in the United States. It certifies that you can hold a client’s whole financial life in view at once — and that you are held to a fiduciary duty when you give the advice.

Awarded by CFP Board. One comprehensive exam, offered in three windows a year, with the education, experience and ethics requirements alongside it.

Who earns the CFP® marks

The roles most represented in our CFP® cohort — wherever the job is advising a household rather than running a portfolio.

Advisors going fee-only

Advisors moving from product sales to planning-led, fiduciary advice, where the marks are effectively the entry ticket.

Paraplanners stepping up

Associate and support planners taking the exam as the gate between building the plan and owning the client relationship.

Accountants, bankers, insurance

Professionals with one deep specialism who need the other seven domains to advise on the whole balance sheet.

Wealth management & RIA teams

Private-client and RIA staff whose firms now count CFP® professionals as a headline measure of bench strength.

Career changers

Entrants from adjacent fields — a fast-growing share, with almost half of recent candidates under 30.

  • Lead Financial Planner / Wealth Advisor
  • Private Wealth / Client Advisor
  • Paraplanner advancing to advisor
  • Retirement or Estate Planning Specialist

The career it opens — and what it pays

Planning pay is unusually back-loaded: the median planner earns most of it through variable pay and profit share, both of which follow the client relationships you are trusted to lead. The marks are what firms use to decide who leads them.

The climb is steep and it is long: the median planner with under five years of experience earns a little over half the profession-wide median, and roughly a third of what a twenty-year planner does. The marks are the step that makes the climb available.

Pass rates, told straight

The headline rate has sat in the low-to-mid 60s for three years, and the gap that matters is not between sittings — it is between first-time and repeat candidates. In March 2026, 69% of first-timers passed against 60% of resitters. A first attempt made from a finished plan is worth more than a second attempt made from a rushed one, which is why our pacing plan is built backward from your exam window.

About the CFP® program

No — the CFP® exam is a single comprehensive exam. We split the curriculum into two study parts (Foundations and Advanced Planning) so the eight domains are easier to learn and revise; the exam itself tests them together.
