Sustainable investing, argued from evidence — not adjectives.

The Sustainable Investing Certificate — CFA Institute’s renamed Certificate in ESG Investing — is the global standard for turning an ESG factor into a changed forecast, a changed discount rate, or a changed portfolio weight. One exam, nine chapters, no prerequisites. Omni Finance Academy is the prep desk built around it.

Why the certificate now

We will not sell you a boom. 2025 was a hard year for sustainable funds: flows turned negative, labels were withdrawn, and “ESG” as a marketing category lost ground. What did not go away is the requirement — climate, social and governance data now sits inside mandates, disclosure regimes, and credit files whether or not a fund carries the label. That is precisely why the credentialed, defensible version of this work is worth more now than it was at the peak.

9%

What the certificate is

Launched by CFA Institute in 2019 and renamed the Sustainable Investing Certificate in April 2025, the credential covers the full chain from ESG data to an investment decision: the market and its participants; environmental, social and governance factors; engagement and stewardship; analysis, valuation and integration; portfolio construction; and client mandates and reporting.

Awarded by CFA Institute. One computer-based exam, booked on demand at test centres and online worldwide — the same credential candidates knew as the Certificate in ESG Investing.

A specialism, not a shortcut — many candidates hold or are working toward both.

Why this material has teeth

The syllabus is not a set of opinions about sustainability. It is the working vocabulary of a decade of disclosure regulation — the frameworks your mandates, product documents, and client reports are written against, whichever way sentiment turns.

  1. 2017

    TCFD recommendations

The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures sets the four-pillar template — governance, strategy, risk management, metrics — that almost every later regime borrows from.

  2. 2021

    SFDR applies in the EU

From 10 March 2021, EU managers must classify and disclose sustainability characteristics at both entity and product level. Article 8 and 9 enter the vocabulary.

  3. 2023

ISSB issues IFRS S1 and S2

A global baseline for sustainability and climate disclosure, built on the TCFD structure and adopted or referenced by jurisdictions worldwide.

  4. 2024

    UK SDR labels go live

The FCA’s Sustainability Disclosure Requirements introduce investment labels and anti-greenwashing naming and marketing rules for UK funds.

  5. 2025

    First CSRD reports land

The first wave of Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive reports is published, moving company-level ESG data from voluntary to audited.

Who takes the certificate

The roles most represented in our cohort — wherever someone has to defend an ESG conclusion to a portfolio committee, a client, or a regulator.

Portfolio managers & analysts

Investors who need ESG factors to change a number in the model, not sit in an appendix beside it.

Stewardship & engagement teams

Specialists running voting and engagement programmes who need the frameworks and escalation ladders cold.

Product, sales & client reporting

Teams writing mandates and client reports that have to survive a regulator reading them word by word.

Risk, compliance & disclosure

Professionals mapping SFDR, ISSB, SDR and CSRD obligations onto what the firm actually holds and reports.

Charter candidates & entrants

CFA and FRM candidates adding a focused specialism, and graduates entering sustainable finance without a prerequisite in the way.

Roles it opens

  • ESG / Sustainable Investment Analyst
  • Responsible Investment / Stewardship Specialist
  • ESG Product or Client Solutions Manager
  • ESG Risk & Regulatory Reporting Analyst
  • Portfolio Manager with an ESG integration mandate

What the exam actually tests

Nine official chapters, grouped into the weight bands CFA Institute publishes for the exam. Two of them — analysis, valuation and integration, plus portfolio construction — carry roughly two-fifths of the paper between them, which is exactly where most candidates under-prepare.

The prep desk built for sustainable investing

Every reading maps to one official chapter outcome — with the integration arithmetic worked in full rather than described, because that is the part the exam actually marks.

Chapter-mapped study notes

Every reading tied to one official chapter outcome, with the stewardship codes and disclosure regimes checked against the current curriculum edition — not a legacy syllabus.

Integration worked end to end

The heaviest-weighted chapter taught the only way it is testable: an ESG factor tracked through a forecast, a discount rate, and a portfolio weight, with the arithmetic shown.

Full-length timed mocks

100 items in 2 hours 20 minutes, in the exam’s mix of standalone questions and item sets — so pacing is rehearsed before it costs you marks.
