Independent and mutually exclusive projects

A feasible combination depends on the relationships between proposals as well as their individual values.

State the simplified independent case

Two proposals are independent in this cluster when choosing one does not require, exclude or alter the modeled cash flows of the other. Under an additive model and sufficient budget, both can enter a combination. The definition belongs in the assumptions.

Specify a choice that cannot coexist

Two alternative machines for the same required process may be mutually exclusive. Adding their individual NPVs as though both were feasible would invent a combination that the case does not permit.

Separate a dependency from either simple label

Proposal relationships
RelationshipFeasible-set effect
IndependentCan combine under other stated limits
Mutually exclusiveAt most one from the defined group
PrerequisiteOne choice requires another
Interactive benefitsCombined value may differ from the sum

Use a calculator that matches those relationships

The bounded combination tool below assumes independence and additive entered NPVs. It does not enforce prerequisite or exclusivity groups. A successful numerical search cannot validate relationships that were omitted from its inputs.
