Scope category and data quality

An emissions category describes coverage; it does not by itself establish measurement accuracy or completeness.

Inspect how the value was obtained

A direct source can use estimated activity or a generic factor. A value-chain source can use detailed supplier measurements. Quality depends on the actual records, methods and coverage rather than a universal ranking of scope numbers.

Retain differences inside a total

An aggregate can combine high- and low-quality components. A single scope-level total can conceal which values are uncertain or omitted. Keep a component log when the interpretation depends on those differences.

Avoid an unsupported assurance claim

A calculation with a known category is not an independently assured inventory. State what the evidence supports and which inputs remain estimates. The educational tools below perform arithmetic on entered assumptions.
