On a CV, use “CFA Program candidate” only while you are registered for an upcoming exam or awaiting its result. If you are not currently registered, state a level you have actually passed instead. Do not put CFA after your name, suggest that you hold part of the designation, or forecast when you will receive the charter.
Check your status before choosing the line
CFA Institute’s guidance on sharing achievements makes the distinction practical: active registration or a pending result supports a candidate statement; past exam progress on its own supports only a factual passed-level statement. Its Standard VII(B) guidance also says candidacy must be identified clearly and must not be presented as a partial designation. Recheck this line whenever your registration or result status changes.
| Registered for an upcoming exam or awaiting a result | CFA Program candidate | CFA charterholder in progress |
| Passed Level I, with no current registration | Passed Level I of the CFA Program | CFA Level I after your name |
| Passed all exam levels but not awarded the charter | Passed all levels of the CFA Program; charter award remains subject to applicable requirements | CFA charter pending |
These are sample lines for a CV, not claims about a real person. Put the statement in an education or professional development section, where the context is clear. The crucial wording is “candidate” for current candidacy and “passed” for a completed exam level. A passed level describes an exam result; it does not confer letters to add after your name.
Keep the designation separate from exam progress
CFA Institute says the CFA post-nominal is for a charterholder with a current right to use it. A candidate should therefore leave it out of the name line. “CFA, expected” and “charter pending” imply an award that has not happened, and a projected charter date is not appropriate. The final award depends on requirements beyond exam passes, so even someone who has passed all levels should state that fact without predicting an award.
Before sending a CV, make a quick status check: confirm whether you are currently registered or awaiting a result; write only the highest level actually passed; remove any partial designation, post-nominal or expected charter date. The CFA programme page provides programme context, and this related Insights article discusses how exam progress can read to a recruiter. For the permitted wording itself, use CFA Institute’s guidance above.
