Passing the CFP exam does not itself complete certification. CFP Board also requires evidence of the education, experience and ethics requirements, followed by its final certification steps and authorisation to use the marks. A candidate who has passed should check which of those items CFP Board has actually recorded as complete.
Check education evidence, not just coursework
CFP Board describes education, experience, exam and ethics as the components of its candidate checklist. The education requirement includes approved financial planning coursework and a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution. If your degree is complete but still unverified, ask the institution to send the official electronic transcript directly to CFP Board; the degree requirement page says a copy released to the student does not count as official.
Document qualifying experience
CFP Board offers a standard pathway of 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process and an apprenticeship pathway of 4,000 hours with additional conditions. Those are CFP Board’s currently published route totals, not two amounts to add together. Its experience requirement says qualifying work may be gained before or after the exam, so passing candidates should enter and verify any eligible work already completed.
The shorter pathway is more constrained: review CFP Board’s paths to experience before assuming a job title or time spent in a planning firm qualifies. Keep a record of responsibilities, dates and supervision that matches the route you claim. Work on client attitudes and preferences, for example, may be part of the planning process; the client values and money scripts explanation illustrates the kind of judgement involved, but it is not a test of whether a particular role meets CFP Board’s experience rules.
Complete the ethics and final steps
The ethics requirement requires an application containing an Ethics Declaration. CFP Board conducts a background check and applies its Fitness Standards before confirming that this requirement is met. Disclose the requested history accurately and wait for CFP Board’s determination.
If experience remains unfinished more than 12 months after passing the exam, CFP Board says pre-certification continuing education accrues until the experience and degree requirements are complete. This is CFP Board’s currently published condition on its experience paths page; check the amount shown in your account rather than treating the exam pass as the end of every learning obligation.
Once the other requirements are fulfilled, CFP Board’s final steps page requires payment of an application fee and an initial certification fee. CFP Board says it will notify you when you are authorised to use the marks. Membership in a planners’ association is not a separate certification step: CFP Board says in its organisation FAQ that it is not a traditional membership association. Until then, do not present yourself publicly as a CFP professional. For readers still planning the exam stage, the CFP programme overview places preparation in context; certification decisions remain with CFP Board.
