Treating an implied forward as a certain future rate

A forward implied by today’s factors reconciles a pricing model; it does not guarantee the rate later observed.

Identify what was actually supplied

The inputs are current stipulated dated factors. Their ratio determines an implied forward interval under a stated convention. Nothing in the algebra supplies a distribution of future policy decisions, risk premia or market liquidity.

Inspect an alternative realization

A fictional implied one-year forward can be 7%, while a later scenario supplies a realized one-year rate of 4%. The latter does not make the earlier ratio calculation an algebra error. It changes the reinvestment outcome relative to the forward-implied breakeven schedule.

Label the result precisely

Write implied forward under the specified curve when reporting the calculation. If a study question assumes realized forwards, state that assumption separately. A promised rate in an actual forward contract also requires its own contractual settlement terms; it is not merely a statement about future spot observations.
