Choosing the return basis for a benchmark fit

The same numbers can represent different fitting questions when their source definitions differ.

Match the actual period boundaries

Start and end dates, frequency and missing-observation handling should align. Two lists having the same length is not evidence that their corresponding rows describe the same period. Retain date or period keys in the worksheet.

Read the return construction

Price and total returns, gross and net returns, currency conversions, and raw and excess returns can differ. The tool does not fetch these definitions or convert a mixed basis into a compatible record.

Enter the labeled representation

Both public fields expect percentage numbers. A return of 1% is entered as 1 or 1%, not an unlabeled decimal 0.01. Record any conversion before interpreting the resulting slope or intercept.
