Trace a residual write-down through private multiples

Reducing residual value from 110 to 80 lowers TVPI from 1.5× to 1.2× when other inputs remain fixed.

State the isolated mark change

The original record has paid-in 100 and cumulative distributions 40. At the first date residual value is 110. At the later date it is 80. The case assumes no intervening contribution, distribution or other adjustment.

Recompute the affected component

DPI stays 0.4× because past distributions and paid-in are unchanged. RVPI changes from 1.1× to 0.8×. TVPI therefore changes from 1.5× to 1.2×.

Do not reverse a historical receipt

The 30 mark-down reduces remaining estimated value. It does not imply that the investor paid back 30 of an earlier distribution. Cash-transfer records and residual-value records have different roles.

Report the valuation dependence

TVPI includes the selected residual mark, so the result depends on that valuation. This sensitivity does not establish which mark is correct or predict eventual proceeds. Retain the valuation date, method and unresolved assumptions.
