Identify the covered time interval
A six-month meter total and an annual report describe different durations. Doubling the six-month amount is an extrapolation assumption, not a directly observed annual amount. Seasonality or operational changes can invalidate that shortcut.
Match the denominator period
An annual revenue denominator paired with only six months of emissions can understate the covered-period ratio. Use compatible periods or document a justified estimation method.
Keep timing visible
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Start and end | Actual covered dates |
| Duration | Months or another interval |
| Estimate status | Observed versus extrapolated |
| Denominator dates | Same coverage as the numerator? |
Avoid attributing a timing mismatch to efficiency
A lower total can reflect fewer covered months rather than reduced activity or cleaner operations. Reconcile duration before interpreting a trend. The same caution applies when a business acquisition changes the covered period.
