Inspect scatter and residual views of a return fit

A fitted line and a residual plot answer different questions about the supplied record.

On this page

Read actual paired points

The scatter view places benchmark returns on the horizontal axis and asset returns on the vertical axis. Points are not connected in time order. The fitted line is shown within the observed benchmark range, not as a future path.

Read deviations from the line

Residual is observed asset return minus fitted return. The second view plots those signed deviations against benchmark returns and marks zero. A curved pattern or uneven spread can motivate a model review, but a small plot does not prove an assumption is valid.

Two plot questions
ViewQuestion
Scatter with fitHow do observations lie relative to a line?
Residual versus benchmarkWhat structure remains after subtracting the line?
Period tableWhich supplied pair produced each value?

Choose evidence rather than a visual verdict

Review matched dates, unit definitions, unusual observations and possible nonlinear relationships. The tool performs no normality, homoskedasticity, significance or independence test. Keep those questions separate from computing the line.
