Recognising a solution versus solving independently

A familiar explanation is different evidence from an answer you can explain and reproduce without seeing it.

Keep the first attempt visible

Write the setup, answer and reason before opening the solution. In an NPV exercise, retain the cash-flow signs and period exponents you used. That record lets you identify the step that changed after viewing the explanation.

Use a changed condition to test understanding

After reviewing the solution, try a fresh task with a meaningful changed condition: for example, move an initial payment to a later period or change the coupon frequency. Replacing only the numbers may test arithmetic while leaving a misunderstood convention unchallenged.

Record the level of help

Evidence from an attempt
ResultInterpretation for review
Solved and explained independentlyEvidence for this task under its conditions
Solved after a hintIdentify the hint and practise its decision independently
Understood only after reading the answerSchedule a fresh retrieval and application task

Use the record to choose learning work

The categories describe how the attempt was completed. They are not calibrated estimates of exam readiness or future success. Use them to identify the next task rather than assign a pass-probability label.
