Practice: emissions units and data status

Three original tasks distinguish a calculation from the source and coverage decisions supporting it.

Read the supplied definitions

The factor in the first exercise is fictional and already expressed in kg CO2e per MWh. The other tasks concern what the source actually discloses. No question assumes a legal reporting obligation.

Explain the distinction before choosing

Identify the scale, evidence status or dataset version. Each answer includes the reason the alternatives fail so you can follow the related resource for deeper review.

Try the questions

Activity is 12 MWh and the fictional factor is 400 kg CO2e/MWh. What is the product in metric tonnes CO2e?

  • A.

    4.8

  • B.

    4,800 tonnes

  • C.

    0.0048 tonnes

Answer and explanation

Answer: A

Cancel MWh, then convert kilograms to metric tonnes once.

A

12 × 400 = 4,800 kg, divided by 1,000 gives 4.8 tonnes.

B

This retains the kilogram number but changes its unit without conversion.

C

This applies an extra thousand-fold division.

Two sites disclose emissions; a third has no activity record. What does the sum of the two reported sites establish?

  • A.

    The complete three-site inventory

  • B.

A covered subtotal with unresolved coverage

  • C.

The third site has zero emissions

Answer and explanation

Answer: B

Keep data coverage visible rather than assigning zero to missing information.

A

The third site is not measured or otherwise represented.

B

The arithmetic covers the supplied records; the missing site remains unknown.

C

No record does not establish a measured zero.

A webpage updated in 2026 lists a dataset titled 2025. Which version label is supported without further evidence?

  • A.

    2026 factor release

  • B.

The listed 2025 dataset, with its actual documentation

  • C.

Every factor is current for all locations

Answer and explanation

Answer: B

Distinguish webpage access/update dates from dataset and activity periods.

A

The webpage date alone does not establish a new factor dataset.

B

Use the file’s release identity and row coverage rather than the page footer.

C

Geography and period suitability require separate evidence.
