Energy-unit and mass reconciliation

Changing unit representation should not change the calculated physical amount when all conversions are consistent.

Use explicitly fictional input values

The activity is 12,000 kWh, equivalently 12 MWh. The demonstration factor is 0.4 kg CO2e/kWh, equivalently 400 kg CO2e/MWh or 0.4 tonnes CO2e/MWh. These are demonstration factors, not real grid data.

Calculate all three representations

Equivalent products
RepresentationCalculationResult
kWh and kg/kWh12,000 × 0.44,800 kg
MWh and kg/MWh12 × 4004,800 kg
MWh and tonnes/MWh12 × 0.44.8 tonnes

Inspect an unconverted combination

Multiplying 12 MWh directly by the numerical 0.4 from a per-kWh factor without converting units gives the wrong mass scale. The labels reveal the mismatch before interpreting the number.

Keep equivalent units from implying equivalent coverage

This check holds the factor definition fixed. A different dataset with the same units may cover different gases, geography or stages, so its product is not validated by this unit exercise alone.
