Revenue units and emissions intensity

An intensity number depends on the stated revenue scale and currency as well as the emissions numerator.

Keep millions and base currency distinct

Fictional emissions are 165,000 tCO2e and revenue 550 million currency units. The ratio is 300 tCO2e per million currency units, or 0.0003 tCO2e per one currency unit. These represent the same scaled ratio.

State a conversion assumption before comparison

If another report uses a different currency, a conversion affects its revenue denominator. The exchange-rate date and method are additional inputs; unchanged emissions need not produce unchanged converted intensity. No current exchange rate is assumed here.

Avoid an unsupported efficiency story

Revenue can move with prices or currency even when physical activity is unchanged. Read the denominator definition before describing a falling revenue-based ratio as a technology improvement.
