Emission-factor coverage

Two factors with the same unit denominator can cover different sources and therefore answer different questions.

Separate a unit match from a coverage match

A generation-only factor and a life-cycle factor can both be expressed per kWh. Their numerators may cover different upstream or other stages. Matching kWh alone does not justify treating the products as the same inventory quantity.

Check for overlaps when aggregating

If a broad factor already contains an upstream component, adding a separately calculated version of the same component can duplicate it. Identify the boundaries before summing calculated amounts.

Keep a sourced factor from becoming universal

A factor can be credible for its intended scope and still be inappropriate for another geography, year or method. Record the specific row and purpose rather than treating the publisher’s name as sufficient evidence of every use.
