Activity times an emission factor

A product of activity and an appropriately defined factor produces the numerator unit carried by that factor.

Read the dimensional relationship

E=A×fE=A\times f

A is activity in the factor denominator unit, and f is emitted mass or CO2e mass per that activity unit.

Fictional demonstration
ActivityFactorProduct
12,000 kWh0.4 kg CO2e/kWh4,800 kg CO2e
12 MWh400 kg CO2e/MWh4,800 kg CO2e

Convert before multiplying when units differ

If activity is in MWh and the factor per kWh, multiply the activity by one thousand first. If factor mass is in tonnes, convert the output to kilograms only after retaining the correct mass scale.

Keep the coverage with the equation

The arithmetic does not select a geography, reporting year or inventory method. A factor with compatible units can still have incompatible source coverage. Use its documentation and record those assumptions.

Do not treat demonstration values as real factors

The factor values in this table are fictional and deliberately equivalent. They demonstrate unit cancellation rather than current emissions for a utility or country.
